Water supports digestion, temperature control and kidney health. Many pets — especially cats — don’t drink as much as they should, so a few small changes at home can make a real difference.

How much is enough?

Needs vary with size, diet, activity and weather. Pets on wet food get part of their water from meals, while those on dry food need to drink more. Rather than chasing an exact number, learn what’s normal for your pet and watch for changes.

Make water more inviting

  • Fresh, every day. Rinse and refill bowls daily; many pets avoid stale water.
  • The right bowl. Wide, shallow ceramic or stainless steel bowls are easy to clean, and cats often prefer bowls that don’t touch their whiskers.
  • More than one spot. Place water in a few quiet places around the home, away from the food bowl and the litter box.
  • Moving water. Many cats are drawn to fountains; just keep filters clean.
  • Wet food. Adding some wet food to the diet is an easy way to increase intake.

Small daily habits — clean bowls, a second water spot — often matter more than any single trick.

Easy daily observations

  • Does the bowl empty much faster or slower than usual?
  • Any changes in how often your pet urinates, or in litter clumps?
  • Signs of dehydration such as dry gums or unusual tiredness on hot days?

When to call your vet: a sudden, lasting increase or decrease in drinking or urination can be an early sign of a health issue. If you notice one, contact your veterinarian.
